Aaron Sorkin, the creator of The West Wing, is to collaborate with George Clooney on upcoming courtroom drama The Challenge.

Variety reports Clooney's production company Smoke House is to develop the film, based on the trial of Osama Bin Laden's driver Salim Hamdan.

The Burn After Reading star may direct the film and is likely to play Navy lawyer Charles Swift who worked with law professor Neal Katyal to ensure Guantanamo Bay detainee Hamdan received a fair trial.

Sorkin, currently working on a film charting the development of social networking site Facebook, has been signed up by Warner Bros Studios to write The Challenge, based on Jonathan Mahler's book The Challenge: Hamdan v Rumsfeld and the Fight Over Presidential Power.

Having been captured in Afghanistan in 2001 and detained in the Guantanamo camp for five years, Hamdan eventually receiving a five-and-a-half year sentence having been found guilty of providing material aid to al-Qaeda.

While The Challenge will not debate whether or not Hamdan was guilty, it will chart the battle of the two lawyers who challenged former US president George Bush over the bypassing of Congress to establish military tribunals.

Decided in June 2006, the Hamdan v Rumsfeld case saw the US Supreme Court rule that the military tribunals violated both the Geneva Convention and the US Uniform Code of Military Justice.
