Stiff competition but few big surprises in 2001 Oscar nominees

"Gladiator" slayed 'em at the pre-dawn announcement of the 73rd Academy Award nominations on February 13rd. The epic sandal opera was nominated for 12 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Historical swordplay was the order of the day, as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" garnered 10 nods, including ones for Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. The Taiwanese martial arts romance surpassed "Life Is Beautiful" as the highest grossing foreign language film in US history this weekend and it's still gathering steam, climbing to the No. 4 position at the box office in its 10th week in release.

Director Steven Soderbergh will compete against himself in two categories as his films "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic" have booth been nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. Julia Roberts was nominated for Best Actress for "Brockovich," a nod that has been anticipated since the film opened in March. "Brockovich" received five nominations, as did the Juliette Binoche romance "Chocolat."
