Adam Sandler stars as a man who reconnects with his son Todd (Andy Samberg) in his latest comedy caper 'That's My Boy'. Sandler's character Donny became a father while still a teenager, though after not seeing each other for years, the pair reconnect on the eve of Donny's wedding.
It's standard fare for Sandler, who is making a habit of churning out silly comedies, which - in all fairness - he has huge success with. Claudia Puig of the Hollywood Reporter offered a damning appraisal of the film, saying, "Another bottom-of-the-barrel raunchfest that is bound to make far more money than such sludge could ever deserve". David DeWitt of the New York Times was similarly unimpressed by 'That's My Boy', though did add, "Mr. Sandler manages a frame or so of genuine sentiment, and the caricature is so ugly it's cute. He's a performer, and there are moments when audiences will surrender to his shtick. Moments". The Wrap bluntly stated that the movie was "Not Adam Sandler's Worst, But Still Terrible". The criticism all made for a rather paltry 14 per cent rating on review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes, though it's far better than Sandler's previous effort.
Even fans of the comedy star will want to forget 'Jack and Jill', the actor's 2011 movie about an advertising executive whose placid family life is thrown upside down when his twin sister (also played by Sandler) arrives for Thanksgiving. For a period, the film held a zero per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though has since fought back to 3 per cent. At the time, Mary F. Pols of Time Magazine wrote, "More than 24 hours has passed since I watched the new Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill and I am still dead inside".
