Soul legend Al Green credits God with saving him from certain death.

The reformed wildman admits his hectic social life was playing havoc with his health, but he rapidly changed his hedonistic ways when he discovered religion in 1973.

He says, "With the life I was living, every night was a party. I didn't even have to throw the party. So long as I was in town, Al Green was the party. And those parties... there was coke, there was smoke, there was wine and rum, there was naked women, every vice you can think of.

"If I hadn't stopped all that, I'd be with Marvin (GAYE), OTIS (READING) and Sam Cooke now."
