The animated zoo escapees from the Madagascar movie franchise have beaten Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender's Alien prequel to the top of the U.S. box office.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted clawed in an impressive $60.4 million (£37.7 million) over the weekend to lead the new film countdown.
Director Ridley Scott's sci-fi thriller Prometheus, starring Theron and Fassbender, opened in second place with an estimated $50 million (£31.2 million) take.
Madagascar 3 is a global hit, topping box office charts across the world - it broke records in Russia last week (ends08Jun12) when it scored the biggest opening day ticket sales for an animated film in the country's history.
The hit film features the voiceover talents of Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Martin Short, Jessica Chastain and Bryan Cranston.
