Lee DeWyze has won the ninth series of 'American Idol'.

The 24-year-old singer/songwriter won over the public to scoop the recording contract prize in the final of the US reality show last night (26.05.10) and admitted he "couldn't believe" his luck after hearing there had been just two per cent of votes dividing him and his fellow competitor Crystal Bowersox.

He said: "This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. I can't believe this. I love you guys. I've never been happier in my life. There are no words to describe it. This is amazing and I appreciate everything everybody here has done."

Judge Simon Cowell - who made his last ever appearance on the show -had previously spoken about how he thought Lee would win.

He said: "He's worked in a paint shop. He's talented. He hasn't had any real breaks in life, and this has given him a shot, and I like that."

A light-hearted film package was shown at the end of the two-hour programme to recount highlights of Simon's time on the show and comedian Dane Cook took to the stage to crack jokes at the 50-year-old star.

He told Simon: "You have the honesty of Abe Lincoln and the charm of the guy who shot him."

Other stars to sing in the final included last year's winner Kris Allen, as well as Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera and Robin and Barry Gibb.

Lee is now set to release 'Beautiful Day' as his first single.
