Ruben Studdard, the American singer best known for winning season two of American Idol, has filed for divorce from wife Surata Zuti MCCants after a three year marriage, reports E! Online.
Although it is unclear why the couple have chosen to part ways, Ruben cited "irreconcilable differences" on his divorce papers. The couple apparently grew up together and dated each other for two years before tying the knot in June 2008 in Ruben's home town of Birmingham, Alabama - he famously had 20 groomsmen by his side. The singer's publicist Jocelyn R. Coleman explained, "Ruben and Zuri have gone their separate ways". The 31-year-old enjoyed immediate success following his American Idol triumph - topping the Billboard 200 chart with debut album 'Soulful', following pre-orders that topped 1 million. After a Grammy Award nomination for his single 'Superstar', Studdard released his second album 'I Need an Angel' in 2004, topping the Gospel charts and entering the Billboard 200 at No.20. His third album 'The Return' sold 71,000 copies in its first week, but sales declined rapidly after that.
In recent years, Studdard has worked on his health and fitness, losing approximately 80 pounds through a vegan diet and regular exercise. Having signed to Shanachie Entertainment, he is currently working on his fifth studio album.
