The box office woke up laughing this weekend as the straight-up silliness of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Sony's The Other Guys out-performed the dream convolutions of Leonardo Dicaprio in Inception. According to studio estimates, The Other Guys came in at the high end of industry forecasts with about $35.6 million. The result No Doubt came as a relief for Ferrell, whose career appeared to be on the line following the massive failure of last year's $100-million Land of the Lost , which opened with $19 million. Meanwhile, Warner Bros., Inception continued its improbable hold on the mind-gaming crowd, dropping just 34 percent in its fourth weekend to $18.6 million and placing second. Its domestic total now stands at $228.1 million. On the other hand, Disney/Summit's Step Up 3D , the third installment of this relatively low-budget franchise, performed far below its two predecessors, despite the 3D enhancement and surcharge. The $30-million film opened with $15.5 million, down 25 percent from the first Step Up movie ($20.7 million) and 19 percent from the second ($18.9 million). The third weekend of Sony's Salt saw the Angelina Jolie starrer drop 44 percent to $11.1 million, in line with expectations. But Dinner for Schmucks turned out to be dinner for The Other Guys, which captured the young male crowd. Schmucks dropped a whopping 60 percent from last weekend to land in fifth place (from second) with just $10.5 million. An even bigger loser was the second weekend of Charlie St. Cloud, starring Zac Efron, which plunged 70 percent to $4.7 million, to wind up in eighth place.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo 1. The Other Guys , $35.6 million; 2. Inception , $18.6 million; 3. Step Up 3-D , $15.5 million; 4.
