Anna Kendrick has joined the cast of 'Trolls'.

The 'Pitch Perfect' actress is the first star to sign up for the forthcoming DreamWorks animated adventure - which is based on the popular big-haired doll franchise - and will showcase her musical talents lending her voice to the cheery Princess Poppy.

Director Mike Mitchell - who previously worked on 'Shrek Forever After' - said in a statement: ''Anna has proven herself to be a brilliant actress with an amazing singing voice.

''She'll inject Poppy with the exact mix of spirit, sass and song that will no doubt give a whole new life to the iconic Troll dolls.''

The movie is scheduled for release in 2016, on October 21 in the UK and November 4 in the US and there will be a huge merchandise tie-in, as it was previously announced American Girl executive Shawn Dennis will be helping release toys, books, games and other 'Trolls' products.

A statement from DreamWorks Animation last year announced: ''Trolls is a brand with over fifty years of deep heritage and we are thrilled to bring this iconic, multi-generational property to DreamWorks Animation

''We have big plans for this franchise and Shawn Dennis is uniquely suited to lead this charge. She helped grow the American Girl brand into a household name and by bringing this expertise to 'Trolls' she will introduce these characters to legions of new fans around the world.''
