Two violent and intense thrillers, Blood Diamond and APOCALYPTO, will be contending against the romantic comedy The Holiday and the family film Unaccompanied Minors for box-office supremacy over the weekend, and analysts are predicting a tight finish. Daily Variety writer Ian Mohr commented today (Friday) that "the biggest wild card" is Mel Gibson's Apocalypto, which was produced before Gibson's arrest and anti-Semitic rant. "The big question is whether the [director's] off-set antics will turn off his fan base," Mohr wrote. Meanwhile, Nicole Sperling in the Hollywood Reporter predicted that the movie -- and Blood Diamond as well -- may lose female viewers because of the level of violence in the two films. Sperling quoted unnamed insiders as saying that Holiday could come out ahead if only because -- for female moviegoers in particular -- it provides "an alternative to the blood and guts of Blood Diamond and Apocalypto.
