Are Arctic Monkeys playing the London 2012 Olympics' Opening Ceremony tomorrow (July 27, 2012)? An image tweeted by Argentinian journalist Martin Rinaldi certainly suggests that may be the case. The photo appears to show the band's front man Alex Turner, performing live. The caption 'Not For Transmission' partly obscures his face and it's not entirely clear whether or not it was a live shot or not.
Even if Alex was onstage rehearsing with the band, there's no news as to whether the band is playing the opening ceremony or the closer. The stadium will be in constant use until the end of the games so it's feasible that acts playing the closing ceremony could be practising now. However, last month (June 2012), a document was leaked that reportedly revealed that the Sheffield band were indeed scheduled to play, along with M.I.A. and Adele. Paul McCartney also let slip that he would be performing as part of the Danny Boyle-curated opening ceremony.
Last month, Boyle revealed a few elements of the opening ceremony, which reportedly cost in the region of 27 million. Some of these include a "mosh pit" at each end of the arena and a model of Glastonbury Tor, in a nod to the Glastonbury Festival taking a year off this year. The music line-up though, is supposed to have ben kept a secret, though it might well be worth your while betting on Arctic Monkeys putting in an appearance.
