Caped Crusader Batman has fought off challenges from Nicole Kidman's witch and supercar HERBIE to cling onto the number one spot at the US box office.

BATMAN BEGINS, starring Christian Bale as the masked vigilante, has made another $26.7 million (GBP14.8 million) this weekend to keep Kidman's Bewitched off the top of the film list.

The latest Batman movie has now made more than $120 million (GBP66.6 million) in America since its release 11 days ago.

Batman faces another major challenge this week (beg27JUN05) when co-star Katie Holmes' boyfriend Tom Cruise debuts his new sci-fi epic WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Bewitched claimed second place on the new box office list with a healthy $20.2 million (GBP11.2 million) opening take, while Lindsay Lohan's family film HERBIE: Fully Loaded debuted behind MR + MRS SMITH in fourth place with a $12.7 million (GBP7 million) opening weekend take.

GEORGE A ROMERO'S LAND OF THE DEAD debuted in fifth place with $10.2 million (GBP5.7 million).
