The Beach Boys put aside their well-publicized differences over the years, to reunite and perform one of their biggest hits 'Good Vibrations' at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 12, 2012). The group famously fell-apart after legal wrangles and lawsuits, but they will now mark their 50th anniversary with a new album and tour.
The band, including fellow founding member Mike Love, were in good form at the Staples Center and appeared to enjoy sharing the stage with each-other one again. Speaking backstage, lead vocalist and songwriter Brian Wilson said, "It was kind of a different experience. The guys are brilliantly performing their vocals.I'm very proud of the guys". The Beach Boys forthcoming tour will see the group stop in Europe and Japan, and the new album has been penned by Wilson and Joe Thomas. Mike Love, who was not on speaking terms with the head-Beach Boy just a few years ago, described the new songs as "fantastic" adding one particular track named 'That's Why God Made the Radio' is astonishing. He said, "It's a thrill to get together and execute that kind of song". The band's performance on Sunday - their first in 20 years - was one of the energetic high-points in a ceremony otherwise overshadowed by the tragic death of Whitney Houston. The group played on a stage "bedecked with surfboards and large video screens displaying psychedelic patterns", according to the Chicago Tribune, with Wilson, 69, providing keyboards and vocals.
Despite their success, The Beach Boys never managed to win a Grammy Award - Good Vibrations lost out to the Mamas And The Papas 'Monday, Monday', in 1966.
