THE STONE ROSES self-titled debut album has topped a poll for the best British album of all time - beating out competition from a hoard of legendary bands including THE Beatles, The Clash and THE Rolling Stones.

The classic 1989 album was named number one in the poll by British newspaper THE OBSERVER, after being voted for by 100 critics and musicians, including Ozzy Osbourne, former SPICE GIRL Emma Bunton and CLASH guitarist MICK JONES.

But inspite of the accolade, Stone Roses frontman IAN BROWN still thinks the album should have been even better.

He says, "None of us thought the bass and drums were heavy enough, and I still think that."

The Top 10 British albums of all time are:

3. THE CLASH - LONDON CALLING (1979)

4. VAN MORRISON - ASTRAL WEEKS (1968)

5. THE BEATLES - SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (1967)

6. THE BEATLES - WHITE ALBUM (1968)

7. THE ROLLING STONES - STICKY FINGERS (1971)

8. THE ROLLING STONES - EXILE ON MAIN ST (1972)

9. MASSIVE ATTACK - BLUE LINES (1991)

10. P.I.L. - METAL BOX (1979) (GES/WNSOBS/CM)
