Following the tragic scenes surrounding the Trayvon Martin shooting case, Hollywood film 'The Neighbourhood Watch,' starring Ben Stiller, has pulled its advertising from surrounding theatres throughout the state of Florida where the shooting took place. The picture in the advertising shows a bullet-riddled signpost with a shadowy figure and the film's title emblazoned across it, reports the New York Daily News. However, the actual movie has very little to do with the racially charged tragedy instead seeing the likes of Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill playing suburban dads stumbling upon an alien invasion.
A statement from Fox studios said "We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida. The movie, which is not scheduled for release for several months, was made and these initial marketing materials were released before this incident ever came to light. Above all else, our thoughts go out to the families touched by this terrible event."
Author of 'Blockbuster: How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Summer,' Tom Shone commented "Studios curtailing their own publicity campaigns, and even recalling their own movies, in response to tragic events is nothing new." In 2001, for instance, Sony had to re-cut its 'Spiderman' trailers after the original edit contained footage of the twin towers in New York.
