Gravel-voiced singer LOU REED saved the day at the Benicassim Festival in Spain on Saturday (07AUG04) after he stepped in at the last minute to replace Morrissey.

The former The Smiths frontman cancelled his performance at the Valencia bash only hours before he scheduled to sing, citing "technical difficulties with his private airplane".

Disappointed Morrissey fans, who had travelled from the star's native Britain for the gig, were cheered up by Reed's outstanding set, which featured TURN TO ME, SWEET JANE, VENUS IN FURS and the original version of current dance hit SATELLITE OF LOVE.

Backstage Reed spoke out against American President George W Bush, who he hopes will be ousted by John Kerry in the November (04) elections.

Reed explains, "I am in favour of any alternative to Bush. But having said that, I don't think my audience need me to tell them anything at all."
