LATEST: French singer Bertrand Cantat may be allowed to serve the remainder of his murder sentence in his homeland, after he was jailed for beating his actress girlfriend Marie Trintignant to death in Lithuania.

In March (04), Cantat, 40 - the singer of rock band NOIR DESIR - was found guilty of murdering 41-year-old Trintignant following a violent fight in their Vilnuis, Lithuania hotel room last July (03) and was ordered to spend eight years in prison.

Lithuanian officials have told the French authorities they are ready to allow the transfer, the French justice ministry added that the full details of the move have not been finalised.

Lithuanian Justice Ministry spokesman DAINIUS RADZEVICIUS says, "Now the French authorities have to inform us whether they agree to accept Cantat."

The transfer procedure could take two to three months.
