R&B superstar Beyonce is reaching out to cash-strapped residents in Detroit, Michigan - she's handing out hundreds of tickets to her upcoming concert in the city for free.
The Crazy In Love hitmaker will take her hugely successful I Am... tour to Motor City on Saturday (18Jul09) when she plays at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
And Beyonce wants her show to be a welcome distraction for locals hit by hard economic times - particularly in the car industry, with many plants in Detroit being shut down - so she's giving away 1,400 tickets.
The hand-outs began on Wednesday afternoon (15Jul09), but people had already formed a queue hours before to land up to six tickets each.
The generous gesture will continue until Friday (17Jul09), or until tickets run out.
Beyonce is not the first artist to raise spirits in Detroit - rapper Eminem proved he was a hometown hero when he flew 200 unemployed autoworkers from his home city to Los Angeles, so they could cheer him on during an appearance on TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live! in May (09).
