Beyonce Knowles's pregnancy announcement at the MTV Vma awards on Sunday night (28.08.2011) sent social media website Twitter into overdrive according to Twitter's official global PR feed, @TwitterComms.

The news of the pop queen's new arrival sent keys tapping across the globe and set a new record with an incredible 8, 868 tweets per second shattering the previous record set during the US women's soccer team nail biting penalty shoot-out against Japan in July earlier this year which created 7,196 tweets per second. Other notable events which have created a twitter storm are the death of Osama Bin Laden which generated 5,106 tweets per second as well as the Royal Wedding in April this year which peaked with 3, 966. Although only 5 years old, in the past week twitter announced that its users are sharing 350 billion items per day and has 600,000 users signing up daily.

Beyonce announced her pregnancy at the 2011 Mtv Vma awards live on stage after performing in a purple tuxedo jacket and white shirt, she later unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her stomach, smiling "Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet, I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me," according to Mtv.com
