Musician and producer Brian Eno led a bizarre a capella rendition of Lean On Me on Thursday (10Nov11) as a swansong tribute to R.E.M, who shocked the world with the news that they had decided to "call it a day as a band" in September (11).
Frontman Michael Stipe made a surprise appearance on U.S. comedy show The Colbert Report and allowed the TV host, Stephen Colbert, to place him on his Rock & Roll Shelf of Fame, where he sat as Eno stepped up to sing the Bill Withers song with the odd duo.
Stipe poked fun at his reputation for being super-serious by joking, "I was told this is an event to promote human rights in Burma."
