Silver screen icon Brigitte Bardot has called on the Canadian Embassy to abolish the country's annual baby seal massacre.

The actress, backed by a 200,000 signature strong petition and support from the likes of Hollywood actresses Kim Basinger and Juliette Binoche, and Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama, urged the embassy to stop what she calls "animal genocide that disgusts the world".

Around 300,000 seals, mainly harp seals, are killed every year, mainly for their white fur which is sold to Asian markets.

The killing stopped during the 1970s after international outrage at published images of the animals being beaten to death.

However, it resumed shortly after when the Canadian Embassy announced the booming seal population was destroying stocks of commercial fish.
