Brooke Shields won't let her children act until they are older.

The 45-year-old actress shot to fame aged just 12 playing a child prostitute in 'Pretty Baby' but doesn't want her daughters Rowan, seven, and Grier, four, to follow in her footsteps - because she isn't prepared to sacrifice her own career.

Brooke told Psychologies magazine: "I would never start them as young as I did. For a start, my life isn't conducive to that. Selfishly, I wouldn't give up on my career to work on theirs."

However, Brooke will support her daughters - whose father is her screenwriter husband Chris Henchy, 46 - if they want to embark on an acting career once they have finished school.

She added: "If, when they have finished their education, they want to do it, I will do whatever I can to help them."

Last year, Brooke appeared in 'Furry Vengeance' - her first movie since 1999 - and admitted she went back into acting so her children could see her work.

Brooke - who stars alongside Brendan Fraser in the comedy film - said: "Brendan is a ridiculous draw and I want to do movies my kids can see. The opportunities don't come that often, especially for my age bracket. It's almost like, 'I'm not 20 but I'm not 50.' There aren't that many roles."
