Singer Cat Power was hit with crippling writer's block following a heartbreaking love split.
The star reveals she was ready to settle down with a longterm partner after 2008's Jukebox, but when that relationship failed, she found herself emotionally lost and unable to come up with ideas for new tracks.
She says, "I entered a long relationship which I really wanted to be successful. You know that thing we're all raised to want: a beautiful life with children - that family thing that is tangible? I was trying to grow my personal life in a way that I never did before."
Power was finally able to turn her attention to her music and she is now preparing to release her ninth album, Sun, later this year (12).
She adds, "There's a great loss personally in my life right now, but there's also a gift in that I'm lucky I finished this album."
And the singer decided to put herself to the test as she recorded Sun - by playing all of the musical instruments herself: "I wanted to prove that I could depend on myself, musically, because I hadn't been playing guitar or piano in like five years and... it was just this feeling that you're not growing if you're not doing something creative."
