The Elizabeth star and her husband Andrew Upton are already parents to three biological sons, and earlier this month (Mar15), they confirmed reports they had adopted a little girl name Edith Vivian Patricia Upton.

The move sparked rumours Blanchett had finally achieved a dream to add a daughter to her brood, but the actress insists it was "pot luck" whether they were given a boy or girl.

She tells the Sydney Morning Herald, "We've been talking about it (adoption) since our first son was born. Adoption - the process - it's pot luck. It's not about designing a family. It's about welcoming. There's a lot of children out there in need, both children who are up for adoption but also children in the foster system. So it wasn't necessarily about having a girl, but that's what landed in our lap and we feel absolutely blessed."

Blanchett goes on to praise her young sons, Dashiell, 13, Roman, 10, and Ignatius, six, for being so welcoming to their new sister, adding, "They've been extraordinary... I find it extraordinary, glimpsing them becoming a unit. And a very welcoming unit. I'm very proud of them."
