Cate Blanchett is taking on one of the most heart-rending roles of her career - she will play a breast cancer victim who battles the disease while planning her wedding.

The Elizabeth star has joined forces with bosses at U.S. network HBO for a Tv adaptation of cartoonist Marisa Acocella Marchetto's critically acclaimed graphic novel Cancer Vixen: A True Story.

Marchetto was diagnosed with breast cancer while planning her nuptials and she channelled her 11-month health battle into an illustrated memoir, and Blanchett is to step into the brave bride's shoes to tell her story.

The actress will also executive produce the project alongside Sting's wife - film company boss Trudie Styler - and Celine Rattray.
