'Fifty Shades of Grey' producer Dana Brunetti has defended the film's casting following fan backlash.

Avid readers of E.L. James' best-selling erotic novel took to social media to protest the hiring of Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson in the lead roles in the big screen adaptation of the book, but Brunetti has hit back, insisting producers took great care in selecting the actors who will bring Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele to life.

He wrote on Twitter: ''There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc. So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.''

Universal Pictures announced they had selected 'Pacific Rim' star Hunnam and little-known 'Social Network' actress Johnson to star in the movie on Monday (02.09.13), ending months of speculation about who would play virginal Anastasia and her bondage-loving billionaire beau.

The studio previously confirmed that Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct the eagerly anticipated adaptation, while Kelly Marcel is behind the film's script.

Brunetti, who produced 'The Social Network', and Michael De Luca will produce the film.
