Cher - Cher Caps Off New York City's Gay Pride Week
Cher supported activists in their fight for equality by performing a special concert in New York City on Sunday (30Jun13) to mark the end of Gay Pride Week.
Officials at the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and overturned California's Proposition 8 last week (26Jun13), forcing the government to provide equal benefits rights to same-sex spouses across the nation and allow gay marriages to resume in the West Coast state.
To celebrate the landmark rulings, Cher, the mother of transgender reality star Chaz Bono, headlined Manhattan's Dance on the Pier bash, where she delighted concertgoers by performing hits like Believe and Strong Enough.
The Grammy winner had a blast at the event and she insists it was important to show her support for her gay fans, as well as her son, who recently underwent gender reassignment surgery to become a man.
During an interview with U.S. breakfast show Today on Monday (01Jul13), the 67 year old, who has been open about her struggles to accept her daughter's transformation, said, "It's hard for like 40-something years to have this little girl, and... you get used to it... and then all of the sudden (you have a son). I screw up on my pronouns so often, but Chaz kind of cuts me some slack. I'm crazy about him. We are getting along better now... than ever."
