Director Christopher Nolan scrapped plans to film scenes for his new Batman film amid the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York because he didn't want to "trivialise" the demonstrations.
The Dark Knight Rises star Matthew Modine admits he was thrilled to hear he would be shooting scenes in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park around the chaos of the Occupy movement, because it would aid the financially-strapped activists.
But he thinks Nolan made the right decision not to film there.
Modine tells Indiewire.com, "It seemed like a good idea to give (the protesters) an opportunity for work (as extras), to give them money.
"But we didn’t want to trivialise it. It was more important to respect what they’re doing than to do anything that could potentially trivialise the political situation."
Ironically, one of the movie's stars, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, filmed scenes at the site for his arty website HitRECord on Tuesday morning (15Nov11), as police raided the camp in a bid to evict the protesters.
The campaigners were later allowed to return to the park.
