Christopher Plummer won his first ever Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (February 26, 2012), taking home the statuette for Best Supporting Actor for his stand-out performance in indie-drama 'Beginners'. He is the oldest ever actor to win an Academy Award.
Plummer, who wore a purple velvet suit to the awards, was typically humorous in his acceptance speech, lifting the statuette and saying, "You're only two years older than me darling, where have you been all my life?", before thanking his "Long suffering wife Elanine", whom he said "deserved the Nobel Peace Prize" for coming to his rescue every day. Though he fended off stiff competition from the likes of Kenneth Branagh and Max Von Sydow for the award, Plummer was heavily tipped to win after taking home the same gong at almost every other awards ceremony this season. Before the show, Deadline.com movie writer Pete Hammond said, "Christopher Plummer is the sentimental favorite. It would be a huge upset if anybody but Christopher Plummer were to take this home, and it is only his second Oscar nomination, so he is way overdue".
Despite his win, 'The Sound of Music' star Plummer won't have much time to celebrate, having signed up to star in the drama 'Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight', about the boxer's battles with the US government.
