Colin Farrell is back on top of the American movie charts thanks to an impressive $37 million (GBP23.125 million) opening weekend for his new film S.W.A.T.

The cop thriller, based on a hit 1970s TV series, toppled American Wedding from the top of the box office chart, and beat another new film, Freaky Friday, to the top spot.

In S.W.A.T. Farrell plays a rookie on Los Angeles' fearsome Special Weapons + Tactics squad, opposite LL Cool J, SAMUEL JACKSON and MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ.

Freaky Friday, which debuted in second place with a solid $22.3 million (GBP13.94 million), is another 1970s remake - of a Jodie Foster film.
