The BRIT Awards statues have been unveiled.

The trophies which will be given to winners at the annual music industry awards ceremony have this year been designed by artist Damien Hirst, and see the statuette of Britannia painted white and covered in coloured spots, reminiscent of his famous spot paintings.

He said: ''I am honoured to be asked to design this year's statue, it has become such an iconic award, I love the BRITs.''

The BRIT Award statues have been designed by different figures from the worlds of art and fashion since 2011, with the first created by Dame Vivienne Westwood and last year's designed by pop artist Sir Peter Blake.

Nominations for the BRIT Awards 2013 will take place tonight (10.01.13) in London, and the first award, the BRITS Critic's Choice Award will be handed over from last year's winner, Emeli Sande, to this year's, Tom Odell.

Speaking about his love of music, Tom told the Daily Star newspaper: ''I've loved performing since I was four. There's family footage of me dancing around to some cheesy rubbish like Boyzone when I was a little kid.

''I clearly remember aged five seeing a group at Chichester's bandstand and being completely engrossed.

''Even at five, I thought: 'I want to do something with music.' It sends me into a trance. I've always been obsessed by it.''
