LETHAL WEAPON star Danny Glover has lambasted the American government for failing to sign a pact to rid Ethiopia of its landmines.

The US actor is travelling back to his homeland after visiting young victims of landmine explosions in the struggling African nation, and the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations has pledged to do all he can to help children affected by conflict.

However, Glover is disgusted his own country dropped out of the 1997 Ottawa Convention - aimed at stamping out the landmine problem.

He says, "After talking to children I feel a sense of embarrassment and anger that my own country has not signed the landmine treaty.

"I think the US abandonment of the Ottawa Convention sends a bad message to the rest of the world."

Glover adds around one million landmines litter the country following years of internal conflict and fighting with neighbouring Eritrea and Somalia.
