Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise are in talks to star in 'El Presidente'.

The 'Avengers Assemble' star and the 'Rock of Ages' actor are wanted by director Jay Roach to lead the Warner Bros. political comedy, which tells the story of a Secret Service agent who is tasked with the job of guarding America's worst former president.

Robert is expected to play the bumbling political figure and Tom has been linked with the role of the overzealous spy, who sees his banal job suddenly become exciting when a threat on the president's life suddenly forces the pair to go on the run together, Vulture reports.

Should the acting duo sign up for 'El Presidente' - which will see Dan Goor write The Script - it will be the first time they have teamed up with each other since 2008 star-studded comedy 'Tropic Thunder', which saw the pair appear alongside Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Danny McBride.

Warner Bros. are thought to be keen on reuniting with Robert after working with him on the 'Sherlock Holmes' movie franchise, and the film company are interested in Tom after being impressed with his work on 'Rock of Ages'.
