Soccer superstar David Beckham is embroiled in a bitter race row, after winning an award for ethnic minority sportsmen.
Beckham and Black French soccer star Thierry Henry were named joint winners of the ETHNIC MULTICULTURAL MEDIA AWARDS (EMMAS) Sports Personality Of The Year last night (2JUN04).
But black and Asian celebrities have slammed the decision, because Beckham is white.
PIARA POWER, a campaigner against racism in soccer, says, "It's an insult to those of us who are from an ethnic minority or who are black.
"The way Beckham defines himself, as a young, urban, hip lad, does not make him an ethnic minority."
But EMMAS founder BOBBY SYED has hit back, claiming criticism of the decision is "anti white".
He says, "Racism just doesn't mean insults to black and Asian people. We must not let anti-white remarks to go unpunished."03/06/2004 13:48
