De La Soul star Dj Maseo has expressed his pride for his footballer son after his college team narrowly missed out on winning a prestigious college championship title on Monday night (06Jan14).

The hip-hop veteran's boy, Tre Mason, is a junior running back at Auburn University and he helped the team gain an early lead on their Florida State rivals during the Bowl Championship Series (Bcs) National Championship Game.

DJ Maseo, real name Vincent Mason, was cheering on the Auburn Tigers in person at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California and took to his Twitter.com blog as Tre put his team ahead just minutes into the first quarter.

The proud dad wrote, "My boy scored the first touchdown of the night... The score is 7-3 Auburn! The Energy Is Crazy Out Here!!!"

Young Mason scored another touchdown with less than two minutes left in the game to put the Tigers back on top, with a 31-27 lead, but the Florida State Seminoles, led by star quarterback and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, pulled off a stunning comeback to grab a last-gasp victory, winning the game 34-31.

Despite the loss, DJ Maseo had nothing but praise for his son's efforts, telling his Twitter followers: "I have to say tonight's game was an incredible experience. I'm truly proud of my son. I am inspired by his love and passion for football."

Tre, who apologised to fans after the loss, still had something to celebrate - he ran a total of 195 yards (178.3 metres) during the game, the second-most in a Bcs Championship Game behind Vince Young's 200 yards (182.88 metres) in 2006, according to Espn.com.
