BLONDIE star Debbie Harry is thankful she never had enough money for a serious drug habit, because substance abuse would have ruined her music career.

The punk-pop singer, 60, admits she was experimental in her youth but was too poor to afford an addiction.

She says, "I tried everything. Drugs were just a part of the social life. It was no big deal.

"After a time, drugs got in my way, especially habit-forming drugs that you can't control. Losing control has always been a drag for me.

"Heroin ruined things in New York. The amount of it that was around was insane.

"I was lucky - I wasn't terribly interested and didn't have a lot of money."
