Denis Leary has joined the cast of the 'Spider-Man' reboot.

The 'Rescue Me' actor has accepted the role of George Stacy, father of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), who is one of the love interests of the titular superhero and his Alter Ego Peter Parker.

In the comic books, George, a New York police captain, died in an accident during a battle between Spider-Man and villain Doctor Octopus, leading Gwen to hate the hero.

The Script has not been revealed for this adaptation so it is unclear what Captain Stacy's role will be.

Denis - who voices the character of Diego the sabre tooth tiger in the animated 'Ice Age' movies - last appeared in a live action movie in 'The Secret Lives of Dentists' in 2002. He is currently starring in acclaimed HBO drama 'Rescue Me'.

Andrew Garfield will portray Spider-Man in the movie while 'Notting Hill' actor Rhys Ifans will play villain The Lizard.

Martin Sheen and Sally Field have recently joined the cast as Peter Parker's Uncle Ben and Aunt May.

'Spider-Man 4' is expected to be out in cinemas in July 2012.
