Soccer icon Diego Maradona has dropped a staggering 12 kilograms (two stone) since taking the brutal measure of having his stomach stapled.

The Argentine former sports hero triumphed in the 1986 WORLD CUP, but his health nose-dived after a battle with cocaine addiction, causing his weight to soar to 114 kilograms (19 stone).

But he now hopes to shed another 48 kilograms (eight stone) by the end of the 2005.

His doctor in Cartagena, Colombia says, "His health is perfect and he is doing exercise."
