Parton Recalls Presley Excitement
The busty Tennessee-native, 58, was delighted when The King approached her in 1974 to ask permission to cover her classic ballad I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, only months after she released the song herself.
After weeks of wrangling with Presley's manager COLONEL TOM PARKER, who wanted half the publishing rights, Parton refused to share control of her song, and the Presley cover was binned.
At her HELLO, I'M DOLLY tour date at the Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada on Friday (22OCT04), Parton reminisced, "I got so excited. I told everybody Elvis was doing it.
"I was disappointed I never got Elvis to record it... but WHITNEY (Houston) did it and made me a ton of money.
"It has been the biggest song of my career."
Parton's ode to the Presley cover, which features the country star duetting with a Presley impersonator, appears on her forthcoming album, which is set for release next year (05).25/10/2004 17:18
