Miley Cyrus thought her Grammy nomination was a ''joke''.

The controversial singer's 2013 album 'Bangerz' has been nominated in the Best Pop Vocal Album category but she admitted she had to check the internet to see if it was true when she was told the news by a friend.

She said: ''I thought it was a joke. My friend was in my room and said, 'Hey! You just got nominated for a Grammy.' And I was like, 'You're kidding ... there's no way.' I Googled and I was like, 'Oh yeah! I am, I actually am!' ''

The 22-year-old pop star's LP spawned the hits 'We Can't Stop', 'Adore You' and 'Wrecking Ball' and despite her success, she isn't banking on picking up the prize because she faces tough competition from Sam Smith, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran in the category.

When asked if she was ready for the ceremony on February 8, she said: ''I don't know. I'm pretty mellow with that kind of stuff ... I'm not a pessimist but I'm just saying I won't be crying myself to sleep if I don't win a Grammy. You know?''

Miley - who is dating the son of Patrick Schwarzenegger, the son of action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger - is now hoping to replicate the success of the record with a new album, but she has delayed the release of the LP because things keep happening in her personal life which she wants to write about.

She told Entertainment Tonight: ''I'm trying to get this stuff out ASAP. I'm working on it! I'm in the studio every day at my house.

''Just when I think I have my record done, something new happens where I want to write about it. I just, I don't know what I want to go out there.''
