British rocker SIR Elton John has been invited to become a fellow of the BRITISH ACADEMY OF COMPOSERS AND SONGWRITERS to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards.

Sir Elton will become one of five new fellows to mark the occasion, and join Sir Paul McCartney, SIR MALCOLM ARNOLD and John Barry, who are existing representatives.

He says, "I am honoured and humbled by this recognition.

"The Ivor Novello Awards are all about the art of songwriting which has always been my passion."

Academy chairman DAVID FERGUSON says, "We are particularly pleased that Sir Elton has agreed to accept this fellowship and we are sure that this will be a very special evening."

The presentation will take place later this year (04).
