Elvis Presley's hit LOVE ME TENDER has been crowned the rock 'n' roll legend's greatest song of all time, in a poll to mark the 50th anniversary of his first single release.
Fans overwhelmingly voted for the classic ballad even though it only charted at number 11 when it first hit record store shelves in 1956.
The tune beat out competition from other Elvis favourites HEARTBREAK HOTEL and SUSPICIOUS MINDS in second and third place respectively.
Fourth was A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION, which failed to make an impact when it was originally released in the 1960s but went straight to number one in 2002 after it was featured in a NIKE advert. JAILHOUSE ROCK completed the top five.
More than 3,000 people took part in the internet poll conducted by British high street chain WOOLWORTHS.
Monday (28JUN04) marks the 50th anniversary of the recording of THAT'S ALL RIGHT (MAMA) at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, America - Elvis' first single and regarded by many as the birth of rock 'n' roll.02/07/2004 19:46
