Emma Stone has been offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in the new 'Spider-Man' movie.

Sony Pictures is reported to have selected the 'Easy A' star over a number of possible alternatives, including 'Glee' actress Dianna Agron and 'Alice in Wonderland' beauty Mia Wasikowska to take on the romantic lead in the movie - which is being rebooted with Andrew Garfield as the titular hero.

However, there is another major female role in the film, Gwen Stacy, which could go to one of the previously-tested actresses, Deadline.com reports.

Doubts have been raised about the abilities of Agron to fulfil the role of Mary Jane - previously played by Kirsten Dunst - because of the large amount of time 'Glee' takes to film.

Hilary Duff had previously believed to be in the running for a leading role in the film after she was seen with a script by a journalist interviewing her, but no mention of her has been made since.

The fourth 'Spider-Man' movie, directed by Marc Webb, is due to hit cinemas in July 2012.
