Rock legend Eric Clapton's favourite guitar has been sold for a record-breaking $959,500 (GBP533,500) at auction in New York to raise money for charity.

The FENDER STRATOCASTER, nicknamed "Blackie" by Clapton was among 88 guitars musicians donated to the sale at CHRISTIE'S sale room, to raise money for CROSSROADS CENTER ANTIGUA - a drug and alcohol rehab centre in the West Indies former addict Clapton founded in 1998.

Organisers were stunned by the huge price - over eight times its estimated value of the guitar, the only guitar Clapton used between 1970 and 1985.

SLOWHAND's 1964 cherry-red GIBSON was sold for $847,000 (GBP470,500), a record for a Gibson guitar, while his 1939 MARTIN acoustic broke further records by selling for $800,000 (GBP444,000) - the highest ever for a Martin.
