Field of Dreams star Kevin Costner became an honorary member of the Cleveland Indians baseball team on Sunday (23Jun13) after he was invited to step up to the plate for batting practice.

The Hollywood actor has been filming new movie Draft Day, in which he portrays the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, in Ohio but he swapped American football for baseball this weekend as he joined the Indians' first baseman Nick Swisher - husband of actress Joanna Garcia - on the pitch at Progressive Field.

Announcing Costner's arrival, Swisher joked, "We have a new player, bro (sic). We signed him to a one-day contract. We've got Kevin Costner on our side."

The actor showed off his batting skills and made a few catches in the outfield before mingling with players and coaches, and the star admitted he was worried he had lost his touch before stepping onto the field.

He tells the Associated Press, "I was actually glad I made contact (to meet with the Indians) because I haven't swung in a couple (of) years. I thought my chances of swinging through the ball were just as good as fouling it off."

Costner's visit to the ballpark took place before the Indians faced off against the Minnesota Twins, but the Man of Steel star's presence failed to bring the home team the good luck they needed - they lost the game 5-3.
