Cube 2: Hypercube Review
Unfortunately Cube 2 comes off as a rather tepid and needless retread of the somewhat clever original, in which a group of strangers find themselves trapped inside a giant network of interlocked, identical cubes, fighting with numerous booby traps and among themselves to try to find a way out. It's all shot on one, very plain set, and with completely unknown actors.
Five years later comes this Hypercube (involving none of the original cast or crew) in an attempt to replicate the no-budget/medium-profits formula. Unfortunately, while the original Cube's minimal-logic plot worked reasonably well (by not taking itself too seriously), the sequel has turned completely and irrevocably bizarre to the point of utter nonsense.
In Cube, the trick is that only one of the 1000 or so cubes leads to the exit, and the cubes actually move around. But there's a formula so you can figure it out if you're really smart.
In Cube 2, the cubes occupy some extradimensional space where time, gravity, and logic don't necessarily exist -- and they can change at a moment's notice. At first we figure there's some reason for all of this (like in the first film), but then we realize it lunacy to try to figure it out. There's no reason behind any of it., and even one the lone victim escapes, it raises more questions than it answers.
That said, there's a certain scrappy charm to the film and its cast of nobodies, though losing the numerous grotesque booby traps is a the biggest shame.
The DVD adds a number of deleted scenes, which mostly turn out to be extended and alternate takes on the ending -- often pre-effects shots on green screens. Unfortunately, none of the aforementioned questions are answered any more fully here. I guess we'll wait for Cube 3: Hyperdypercube.
