Oddball Oklahoma rockers The Flaming Lips have put their own macabre twist on the traditional methods of releasing music - they have put out a unique 24-hour song on a hard drive embedded in a real human skull.
Only five of the unusual pieces of memorabilia are in existence and they have already been snapped up by wealthy fans for a whopping $5,000 (£3,125) - and frontman Wayne Coyne admits he has been fascinated by the idea of finding a use for human remains for a while.
He says, "Nothing that we're doing is bizarre or illegal, in parts of the world and even on eBay you can actually buy real human skulls. There's a place in town (Oklahoma) that's called Skulls Unlimited that's been here for almost as long as The Flaming Lips have been here, and it sells human skulls.
"Heads come into this place and they have these flesh-eating beetles... I would have tweeted a picture of it, but they (the store owners) don't allow it. (The beetles) literally eat every molecule of flesh off of these things (skulls) and you'll end up with a (clean) human skull."
It's not the first time the rockers have worked closely with the dead - the band played two nights on its Everyone You Know Someday Will Die tour at Los Angeles' famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery in June (11). The trio also stages an annual March of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons to celebrate Halloween in their native Oklahoma City.
