The Foo Fighters' new album will be ''pretty f***ing fun''.

The 'Best of You' hitmakers are itching to get back into the studio and record their eighth studio album, and are planning an innovative new approach to make the whole process feel fresh and fun.

Guitarist Chris Shiflett told FasterLouder.com.au: ''I can't go into too much detail, but ... I'm excited about it. Dave [Grohl]'s got a bunch of new songs and the way that we're gonna make the new record - like, the approach for it - is gonna be pretty f***ing fun. And different.

''I feel like Dave's always looking for ways - when we go to make records and we tour - to keep things exciting and keep things inspired and fun. I think he's got some good ideas for this next one.''

The Foo Fighters' last album was 2011's 'Wasting Light' and the band were expected to take a longer break when Dave Grohl announced they would have a hiatus in October last year.

Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, announced last month they had started planning a new album saying frontman Dave's brain was ''working overtime, as usual''.

As for Dave - who completes the band with Nate Mendel and Pat Smear - he has promised some ''crazy'' ideas, saying it wouldn't be a ''conventional record''.
