Jon Stewart's comedic commentary taking to task the Fox News Network for referring to various "wars" on everything from Christmas to chocolate milk but having nothing to say about the "war on women, (i.e. recent efforts to reimpose discriminatory rules affecting women in the workplace) has ignited the anger of Bill Donahue, president of The Catholic League, the nation's largest lay Catholic organization. Much of Stewart's commentary ridiculed Fox's coverage of the "war on Christmas" and at one point included a graphic of a woman who had seemingly placed a plastic Christmas manger between her legs to "protect" herself (a "vagina manger" he called it). "Stewart not only made a vulgar attack on Christians, he objectified women," Donahue said in a statement. "We are asking Stewart to apologize. If he does not, we will mobilize Protestants, Jews, Mormons and Muslims to join us in a boycott of his sponsors. Moreover, we will not stop with a boycott; there are other things that can be done to register our outrage. We are prepared to spend the money it takes to make this a nationwide issue, and we are prepared to stay the course." Donahue's remarks quickly became fodder for a host of liberal bloggers, one of whom headlined, "Catholic League To Crucify Jew For Vagina Manger Blasphemy."
