Rockers Franz Ferdinand emerged victorious at last night's (17FEB05) NME AWARDS in London, where they picked up the Best Album and Best Track honours.

The Scottish band's eponymous debut record was the most popular among readers of weekly UK music magazine NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS (NME), who also voted Franz Ferdinand's TAKE ME OUT as Best Track.

Best British Band went to The Libertines, although former frontman PETE DOHERTY failed to turn up to the ceremony at the capital's Hammersmith Palais venue.

Legendary British radio DJ John Peel, who died last October (04), was honoured with The Special Award For Lifelong Service To New Music. His widow SHEILA and son WILLIAM collected the award, which was presented by THE UNDERTONES singer FEARGAL SHARKEY.
